Pipes are a common and memorable image for those who love J.R.R. Tolkien and his famous Middle-Earth. Gandalf, Aragorn, Bilbo, and Tolkien himself are rarely remembered without a good pipe in pocket or in hand. Even the mention of Tolkien’s country of origin brings to mind a good English gent dressed in tweed carrying a pipe as he walks the English countryside.
Clay pipes first appeared in England during the 16th century when tobacco was introduced. They were cheaper for the lower class than briar pipes, and their tradition has lived on due to some unique advantages they bring. Tobacco will stay true to its flavor when smoked through a clay pipe and won’t pick up a clay flavor like it will with briar. Similarly, the clay pipe itself won’t absorb the flavors of any tobacco smoked through it. This makes clay pipes ideal for sampling different tobaccos. Also, clay is able to withstand higher heat than briar, so cracking is less common.
