Gardens have long been a place of leisure and respite. Though they may produce both beautiful and practical goods in flowers and vegetables, the art, and sometimes science, of cultivation has been a beloved pastime for centuries. In this time of uncertainty and ongoing cancellations, a garden has proved itself once again to be a sanctuary. Consider Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel The Secret Garden. These children plagued by grief and hopelessness found a place to pour out and learn love by cultivating a garden. It became a place to not just escape bitterness, but a place to learn as well. As we are unable to travel much farther than our own backyards, we hope you may find a place of peace and respite in your little corner.
“Where you tend a rose my lad, a thistle cannot grow.”
― Francis Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
