The Leading Health Benefits of Green Tea
It’s no secret that green tea can be extremely beneficial for the body. Inherent in the tea plant are potent antioxidants and other beneficial compounds that over time can improve one’s health.
As one of the premier tearooms in Albuquerque, The St. James Tearoom carries many varieties of green teas, and we are pleased to share with you five of the leading health benefits they offer.
1. Weight Loss
According to a recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition, green tea offers health benefits for the overweight and obese by increasing metabolic function, resulting in a loss of body weight because the body processes all food more quickly and more efficiently. It is the catechin molecules found in green tea that have this influence.
2. Cardiovascular Health
In a Japanese study featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers that tested 40,000 people over eleven years found that those who drank at least five cups of green tea each day were far less likely to suffer from a stroke or other cardiovascular issues. They highlighted in their research that green tea’s polyphenols help strengthen artery walls.
3. Cholesterol
Another Japanese study featured in the British Medical Journal found that those who drink greater quantities of green tea each day had more balanced cholesterol levels than those who don’t. This was attributed to the anti-inflammatory compounds in green tea.
4. Reduced Stress
Green tea also helps reduce stress, according to a recent study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers demonstrated that green tea itself, and the calming ritual and process of preparing and steeping tea could directly reduce the body’s stress levels. Green tea also has a marvelous substance called L-theanine (which can be purchased in a health food store as a sleep aid), and this alters the alpha waves in your brain, calming you and helping relax your mind.
5. Cognitive Function
Recent research featured in the Molecular Nutrition and Food Research journal found that green tea benefits the part of the brain responsible for short-term and long-term memory and offers increased brain cell production in the body. In addition, the ‘caffeine’ in tea, though less than a cup of coffee, is balanced by the L-theanine, and this unique combination helps to make you more alert while at the same time calming your mind.
