Alfred Bennett Phipps, Apothecary, is quite a distinguished professional to be in such a small village as St. James Market. He began his career in London, where he became a prominent member of The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, and later a master herbalist at the Chelsea Physic Garden on the banks of the Thames. He was well regarded for his brilliant training of the many apprentices studying botany there, and renowned in his abilities in plant identification at this world-famous center of Botany. While there, he became friends with Mr. Robert Fortune – THE Robert Fortune we have all read about in the papers – the one who stole tea plants and tea seeds right out from under the noses of the Chinese, and brought them back in his Wardian Cases to be planted and nurtured at the Chelsea Physic Gardens and from there to India, for the Queen’s own tea estates.
Mr. Phipps made the move from the bustling city and center of learning, the very crown of botanic inquiry and discovery, to our small and countrified village very reluctantly. He misses the professional stimulation and involvement in the Society, and he misses his teaching at the Garden, but is very content now, puttering in his conservatory, keeping track of the travels and travails of Mr. Fortune, reading the writings of Dr. Livingstone in Africa, and dreaming of possibilities of visiting him there and visiting his friend Mr. Fortune in India.
